The Project
Fazenda Mungo is a long-term agricultural project located in the Huambo highlands of central Angola, developed with a phased and disciplined approach. The project is designed to evolve over time through learning, testing, and gradual implementation, prioritising long-term sustainability over rapid scale.
Rather than pursuing immediate production volumes, Fazenda Mungo focuses on building solid technical, environmental, and operational foundations that can support future certified and export-oriented agriculture.

A Phased Development Approach
Fazenda Mungo is being developed in clearly defined phases, allowing decisions to be informed by on-the-ground experience, local conditions, and technical performance.
Phasing is treated as a strategic choice, ensuring that growth occurs only when systems, resources, and conditions are ready.
This approach enables:
- Progressive infrastructure development
- Careful introduction and expansion of crops
- Continuous technical learning and adjustment
- Alignment with long-term sustainability and certification objectives
Project Priorities
Ensuring responsible use and preservation of land resources over time.
Supporting agricultural activity through gradual, well-planned infrastructure investment.
Advancing crops in line with agronomic results rather than predetermined timelines.
Structuring the project to support future certification and market access where appropriate.
These priorities guide decision-making across all stages of development.
Infrastructure & Operational Capacity
Fazenda Mungo has access to on-site earth-moving equipment, supporting the gradual development of internal infrastructure such as access routes, preparation areas, and water-related works.
Infrastructure development is undertaken progressively and in line with the project’s phased approach, ensuring that operational capacity grows in step with agricultural needs.
Current Focus
At this stage, Fazenda Mungo’s activities are centred on:
Establishment and expansion of permanent crop areas for avocados
Land preparation and infrastructure development to support future growth
Small-scale trials of additional crops, allowing for technical evaluation and learning
Refinement of systems and practices before commercial production begins
Commercial production has not yet started. The emphasis remains on preparation, performance, and long-term viability.
Regional Integration & Cluster Participation
Fazenda Mungo is a participating farm in the Angola Highlands Avocado Cluster, a pilot initiative focused on the development of export-oriented avocado production in Angola’s highland regions.
At this pilot stage, Fazenda Mungo has been selected as one of three participating farms.
The initiative is supported by the Government of the Netherlands, in collaboration with Angolan public and private stakeholders, and is intended to test coordinated approaches to production, technical standards, and market access.
Participation in the cluster provides a framework for technical alignment and learning, without constraining the project’s phased and independent development approach.
Looking Ahead
